Explore the scenic town of Haines and its fishing heritage!
You begin your tour with a bike ride through picturesque Fort Seward. This 1904 US army facility was the first military installation in Alaska and is now a National Historic Site. From the Fort you head out of town and into the natural world. You bike along the Chilkat River estuary and glacial fjord to a secluded cove across from the historic Chilkat Cannery. You stop along the way for photos of the majestic mountains with possible wildlife sightings of bald eagles, whales, porpoises, and sea lions.
"Chilkat" is native Tlingit for "salmon storehouse." You have the opportunity to see how salmon are still a keystone species of the ecosystem and life in the north. At the cannery you learn about the different species of salmon and see how they are processed and canned. You can purchase some smoked or canned salmon to take home with you.
This a great way to tour Haines while getting exercise. On the other side of every hill you pump up there is a downhill coast where beautiful scenery and fresh spring water awaits you.
